This brilliant blue textile is a llacota, or man's mantle. It is made of very finely woven wool. Shawls like these were worn by the Aymara as an outermost layer in the cold mountainous climate of the Andes. According to Adelson & Tracht in Aymara Weavings: Ceremonial Textiles of Colonial and 19th Century Bolivia, these long monochrome garments were a traditional part of the Aymara man's outfit, but are generally no longer worn by modern day Bolivian men (1983:84). In modern times these garments are usually reserved for special occasions such as weddings.
